Dr Richard Laing M.B., Ch.B., M.F. Hom. Homeopathy and Acupuncture
I practice homeopathy and acupuncture (without needles, using electrical stimulation of points). I qualified as a doctor from Glasgow University in 1976 and have been in practice as a homeopath in Colchester since 1982.
Formerly I also worked at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital in the Skin and Rheumatic Disease departments In addition, I have taught at Allen College of Homeopathy, Chelmsford since its foundation. I am particularly interested in the treatment of stress-related diseases and am researching auriculotherapy – the application of acupuncture to points on the ear to treat the body or mind.

What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the third largest primary health care profession in the world. It is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and their affect on the body. The spine is of central importance. The neuromusculoskeletal system is the nerves, muscles and joints of the body.
What do Chiropractors Treat?
Chiropractors treat a wide variety of injuries and complaints including:
Acute and Chronic Lower Back Pain
Hip and Shoulder Pain
Arm and Leg injuries
Acute and Chronic Neck Pain
What happens on my first visit?
You will have a full medical history of your injury / complaint as well as a general medical history including any medication you are on. Then you will have a thorough physical examination using a wide range of examination procedures to skilfully diagnose your problem including:
Orthopaedic, Neurological and Chiropractic tests and Postural, Cardiovascular and Abdominal testing.
You may be X-rayed depending on the history and examination findings. This may be because of trauma, suspicion of arthritis or pathology or spinal distortions such as scoliosis.
Once a diagnosis has been reached you will then be presented with a full explanation of your complaint and your treatment and you may ask any questions that you may have. A unique treatment plan will then be devised to personally suit you and your complaint and you will receive your first treatment.
Chiropractic treatment mainly consists of manipulation of the joints of the body to improve movement of the joints and decrease muscular tension and inflammation.
Often an audible "crack" or cavitation can be heard. This is merely a bubble of gas popping in the joint that has been stretched open and is a normal side effect of the treatment. Treatment does not usually hurt but some after treatment soreness can be experienced especially if the joints are inflamed. This will settle quickly in most cases.
Chiropractors use a range of different treatments that are modified for each patient. They include joint manipulation, mobilisation, massage, soft tissue treatments, ultrasound therapy and rehabilitative exercise programmes.
Chiropractic has always presented itself as a safe, natural and conservative source of care, offering an alternative to medication and surgery for a wide range of the population.
